Distinguished Foreign Lecture series organized by Institute of Engineering & Management, Kolkata
With great pleasure, we announce you all that the Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Engineering & Management, Kolkata is organizing this Distinguished Foreign Lecture under IEMCONNECT program which is conducted every month by our institute. Prof. Thilo Stadelmann, Director of Center for Artificial Intelligence, ZHAW School of Engineering, Zurich Switzerland is invited to deliver a lecture.
Prof. Thilo Stadelmann is a professor of artificial intelligence and machine learning at the ZHAW School of Engineering in Winterthur, director of the ZHAW Centre for Artificial Intelligence and head of its Computer Vision, Perception and Cognition Group. A computer scientist by training, he received his doctor of science degree from Marburg University in 2010, where he worked on multimedia analysis and voice recognition. Thilo worked in engineering and leadership roles in the automotive industry for 3 years prior to switching back to academia. His current research focuses on robust deep learning to solve diverse pattern recognition tasks such as biometrics, document analysis or computer vision for industrial and medical applications. He is fellow of the European Centre for Living Technology in Venice, Italy, co-founder and board member of Switzerland’s largest innovation network, the data innovation alliance, and of the ZHAW Datalab, one of Europe’s first dedicated research hubs for data science. His book "Applied Data Science - Lessons Learned for the Data-driven Business" was published 2019 by Springer, a pre-print on "A Theory of Natural Intelligence" that informs a future roadmap for machine learning research was released recently. He has 25 projects either completed or ongoing. He has published more than 70 articles in journals, conferences, books, monograph etc. His domain of Expertise and research interests includes Artificial intelligence and machine learning: pattern recognition, computer vision, audio analysis. Current research interests: continual learning and less supervised learning in the context of deep neural networks and reinforcement learning to achieve robust learning systems; ethical and societal aspects of such systems.
He delivered a lecture on "Recent Cases with Deep Learning in Industry” which is very much pertinent to the era of Industry Automation.

Study Abroad Program 2022
The Study Abroad Program 2022 has started for the 1st year Engineering Students in fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning (ML). Students and faculty members from IEM gathered around Kent Ridge Guild House for taking their first session. Prof. Prabir Kumar Das has started the inaugural session. Then Prof. Amartya Mukherjee, HOD CSE(AIML) delivered the opening talk on the Internet of Things. After that Dr. PETER LEONG, AI Specialist and Course Chair Applied AI and Analytics, Singapore Polytechnic took a session on Explainable AI and its Future Application in Industry revolution at the National University of Singapore. After that Dr. Gabor Benedek, CIO Lynx Analytics, Partner Thesys took a session on Data Analysis. It was a great interactive session. Students have learned so many things from this session that will help them in the near future.

Bristol, United Kingdom has delivered a lecture on “Advanced Machine Learning For IoT Application: A Short
Tale of Some Recent Works”. The topic is very relevant for the student and researchers. The lecture was excellent
and the question & answer (Q&A) session was very interactive. More than 50 participants have joined the session.

Woman's Empowerment Program in IEM
IEM in association with the Punjab National Bank has taken an initiative for women employees in college to open an account in PNB to get the following benefits
The women employees can get a 20% discount for opening the locker in any branch of Punjab National Bank.
She will get a debit card without paying any extra charges.
There should be a free insurance contract with Rs. 5laks if there should arise an occurrence of a mishap.
No extra charges will be charged for taking loans from the bank.
Female Employees from IEM gathered in the seminar hall. The Branch Manager from PNB came and told all the employees about this. Many interested faculty members have filled up the form and enjoyed all benefits. This special offer was valid only for 14th June 2022.

International Yoga Day 2022
The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit which means ‘to join’/to unite’. On 11 December 2014, United Nations General Assembly declared to celebrate International Day of Yoga on 21st June every year by resolution
69/131. No doubt in Indian history, the declaration of the International Day of Yoga is a great and proud moment.
Finally, it was declared on 11 December 2014 by the United Nations General Assembly. First time in history it happened that the initiative of any country has been proposed and implemented by the UN within 90 days. Sam Kutesa, President of UN General Assembly, announced to celebrate the International Yoga Day on June 21 and more than 170 countries supported the Yoga Day proposal. From this it came to light that people also know about the benefits of yoga, some of which are visible and some are invisible. IEM also celebrates International Yoga Day with the faculty members and their students.

Solar Hybrid Scooter
We are glad to announce that our faculty member Prof. Subhamoy Ray has designed a Solar hybrid Scooter that is running successfully. Congratulations Sir for your innovative creation. We hope that it will be running successfully. It will run on both petrol and battery. The battery model’s top speed is 80 km per hour. The Charging Time of the scooter is 1.5 hours and it can run 100 kilometers at once charging. It will take 8 rupees (1 unit of electric current) to fully charge the battery. This scooter can be charged with solar power also.

Study tour at ATAL TUNNEL
Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully completed AICTE sponsored study tour of ATAL TUNNEL. ATAL TUNNEL is a highway tunnel built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh, India. At a length of 9.02 km, it is the longest highway single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet (3,048 m) in the world. Our students are fortunate to learn in detail about the tunnel from its creation to the present controlling & running. Here are some glimpses of the visit.

Farewell Ceremony
There is a tradition in every college that the junior students give a farewell to the senior-most and outgoing students. Every student who begins college life must end it one day. This year Institute Of Engineering & Management organized a farewell party on 11th May in Satya Sai Auditorium, Gurukul Campus. All 4th year B. Tech Students along with final-year MBA and M.Tech Students gathered in this program. The farewell party was organized by the 3rd year and 4th year students under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sanghamitra Poddar. They had beautifully decorated the auditorium. On the stage, there was our honorable Principal, and other faculty members. The cultural program started with Welcome speeches by the Principal. They performed other programs like the song, dance, and recitation.At the end, 4th-year students were awarded mementos. Actually, we believe that Things end, but memories last forever!
