When we had started IEM Pet Society in April 2019, our vision was simple and clear – to stand up for all the street animals. It started with us aiming to provide food, shelter and medication to the stray dogs and cats near and around Sector V and Salt Lake.
24th August 2021 –till date :
It became very difficult for the street dogs to find food in this pandemic situation mainly in office area.IEM pet society noticed this problem of street dogs & they do needful things for the survival of these street dogs. Recently society has adopted 150 local dogs in sector v area & taking care of them. Every day we have given them meal mixed with rice chicken & daal. Per month 100kg rice is required to feed the strays along with chicken & daal. Currently we have sterilized 50 local dogs near salt-lake sector v.
January,2021 – till date :
It has been more than a year since the pandemic had started. Our work hasn’t slowed down even by an inch. Rather, its getting only better. We continue to serve the animals with food all throughout this time. Volunteer continue with Vaccinations and medical emergencies. Adoptions have kept increasing, and the support for the team’s work is only getting bigger.
January,2020 – December, 2020:
The beginning of 2020, came with a new set of challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic had caused a lot of harm to the stray animals. This didn’t stop us from doing our part, IEM PET SOCIETY fed up to100dogs per day during this period of the lockdown.
6th July,2020:
T2, telegraph had written an article – “t2 TRACKS DOWN A BUNCH OF ZOOPHILISTS WHO ARE TAKING CARE OF ANIMALS ON THE STREETS DURING THE PANDEMIC”.
April – 3rd December, 2019:
a post was shared from our Facebook page which read – “From feeding the pups, sharing the posts to getting two pups adopted, IEM Pet society has come a long way . We thank Ms. Priyasa Mazumdar for being so kind hearted to adopt one of those puppies. IEM Pet Society is still catering to the needs of the four other puppies. We request everyone to come forward and assist us by sharing this post so that we can find a loving home to the rest of the remaining puppies! “ Within ten days, all the other puppies had been adopted while maintaining proper documentation.
18th August, 2019:
On 18th August, 2019 – the team found a dog which was diagnosed with distemper. The team immediately started arranging for exigency funds through donations and by the next day it was ready to treat the dog medically under the supervision of a well known vet from Kolkata. This particular case made us understand the need to vaccinate, neuter/spay the dogs. Within one month, the dogs near and around had been vaccinated.
May 14,2019:
On this date, we were visited by a team from Radio Mirchi – who wanted to make a video about our initiative and air it both on their Radio Channel as well as on Rj Agni’s Facebook page. The response was overwhelming, the entire Facebook feed was full off shares of that video and 373K views.
May 12, 2019:
It was on May 12, 2019 , our first video got uploaded and reached an overwhelming 5,713 views on our Facebook page. The video captured our way of giving back to mother nature, on Mother’s Day.
April 27, 2019 :
We wrote our first write up to the students of IEM and it read:- “Institute of engineering & management , Kolkata is about to start its initiative on providing a better life for the stray dogs and other animals that reside near the college. IEM Pet Society aims to do exactly that , headed by professor Sanghamitrapoddar and funded by our director Satyajit Chakrabarti sir , this club will function to provide food , vaccination, neutering and medical assistance to all the dogs and other animals that live near our college & different places. We urge the students to join us and volunteer to help us provide them with a better life! “ Our focus was on providing food to the stray animals, and that required great amount of planning and hard work. We decided to feed the animals with a hearty meal which consisted of rice, eggs and dal mixed together, which after few months we replaced the eggs with Chicken. Utensils, gas stove, gas cylinders and pet bowl to serve the food were all arranged for. A local person was hired on a monthly wage basis whose responsibility included cooking and feeding the dogs. We fed 25 dogs on our first day which then gradually increased to 45 by the end of two months.

Environment Friendly Initiative by SMILE on World Environment Day
Trees are essential to life. They give us a link between the past, present, and future. Planting a tree will not only benefit health and the environment but will also strengthen communities. Trees strengthen the distinctive character of a place and encourage local pride. We live in a world where pollution is more than oxygen, where more trees are felled than the number of buildings built. Deforestation has led to an increase in greenhouse gases, soil erosion and loss of habitat. Thus, S.M.I.L.E is all set for a new endeavor. An initiative to plant a tree sapling in order to improve life and fulfill the essential needs of mankind. So join us on 5th November 2019 for a lifelong investment by helping us to plant a tree for a better future for everyone and to make the world a better place to live.
Once again SMILE was successful in organizing yet another venture. A venture to go green, think green and grow green. This small step to portray the importance of plants in our daily life, this small move to not let the leaves leave us, this long term investment, will indeed bring a S.M.I.L.E sometime in the near future.
