IEM-IEDC Tech series- Project Story 2:   The hassle of conducting a fair election is one of the biggest issues that plague governments, and misconduct in such an important process poses a serious threat to the integrity and harmony of a country, state or council. Rigging the EVM (electronic voting machine) is one of the most common ways this crime is committed at the ground level. The EVM is usually a box with many labelled buttons with names of candidates of different political parties, and the vote is cast when the voter presses a certain button and the box records the vote. But being counter based, the button can be pressed by a single person multiple times, thus increasing the voting numbers. To challenge this unfair violation, Rakesh Seal and Sayanti Jana have come up with a unique solution which is up for a patent consideration.   Their concept is to implement a biometric fingerprint scanner and secure database into the EVM, making it possible to give one legal vote only for one person. The system encrypts the users' fingerprint data, and stores it in the local machine, rendering the machine unable to accept another vote for the same person. The machine has two states, unusable and usable. Only when a new fingerprint, ie, a new person, tries to cast their vote, does the machine go to the usable state. In case that same voter tries to vote again, an alarm is activated alerting officials of the fraudster, while the machine itself goes into idle state to prevent anyone from misusing it. The machine also reverts back to the unusable state immediately after a vote is cast, and does not take a vote until a finger is placed, thus effectively covering all bases to ensure a malpractice free voting process.   The security of this system is automated by verification with a local database before allowing a voter to vote, as well as allowing the votes to be counted and released only as a whole "result", thus also protecting the identity of the voter, and making the whole process more secure and efficient.   Rakesh and Sayanti targeted governmental agencies as the major potential client, and hence the security and optimisation of the process was of the utmost importance.   IEM-IEDC is proud of them for pioneering this brilliant project, and hopes to see more ingenious developments from them in future.   We got national news coverage for the same-   Zee News- https://zeenews.india.com/hindi/lok-sabha-elections/engineering-student-rakesh-sheel-made-modified-evm-in-kolkata/492115   News18 Bangla- https://bengali.news18.com/videos/kolkata/smart-evm-fingerprint-authentication-to-protect-against-duplicate-votes-264415.html   #IEM #INNOVATION #ENTREPRENEURSHIP #EVM #INCUBATION #RESEARCH #STUDENTS #STARTUPS #PIONEER Article courtesy: Avijit Bose
