IEM-IEDC Tech Series:
Project Number 3-
As technology evolves to take on newer, unexplored shapes and previously niche software makes its mark on mainstream machinery, AR-VR is a field which stretches the boundaries of reality and imagination, and will leave its impact on every sector.
Two of our students, Rajarshi Lahiri and Ayon Chattopadhyay have undertaken a project, AR scanner, to provide a more immersive experience for everyday life. Their project utilises the Unity game engine along with the underlying AR technology to create a virtual 3D object, which can be pivoted through any angle and point, above a 2D picture or print. The virtual object can be viewed on a smartphone screen, when the back camera is pointed towards the printed image. Viewers can interact with the object by changing the viewing angle and taking the object apart to understand its construction better. This caters to everyday regular objects as well as retailers, research, education, medicine, and any other field images pertain to.
Their passion to make teaching more inclusive, aid students to better their grasp on difficult subjects, support researchers to have easier access to rare 3D designs, and allow better medical facilities, and the lack of availability of such, have fueled this project. This also levels the playing field for distance learning students and online curriculum, since the learners can get a real life feel, even from their homes. They can learn how each object was envisioned from the very beginning to create a real life connect with their field of study.
We laud our members for this unique project, and commend them for their dedication and determination to fulfill their aim. We hope they find success in every aspect in the future, and go on to create more brilliant and inspiring projects.
